Jessie Reyez “Becoming” Documentary
A Toronto native with Colombian roots, Jessie Reyez began her music career at the age of 17, writing songs to express her feelings about a breakup. These days she’s known for critically acclaimed tracks such as “Figures” and “Gatekeeper.” But there was lots of action in between. In ‘Becoming Jessie Reyez,’ our latest LIFT artist recounts her history, explaining some of the moves she made to sort things out, career-wise and life-wise. In a cool collage of animation, personal footage and exclusive interviews, we’re introduced to her cheering coach, her mentors at Toronto’s Remix Project, her superstar collaborator Calvin Harris, her business associates, family and besties. There’s a sense of urgency in Jessie’s art; she weds a determined feminist vibe with love of family, respect for culture and dedication to emotional truth. Her ‘Kiddo’ EP is one of the year’s strongest debuts, full of invention and ambition. She’s someone you know want to know more about, and ‘Becoming’ tells the entire story.
