Tony Yayo Reacts To Drake Sampling His Song “Roll Up” On “Free Smoke” From More Life

You never really know who will end up being sampled on an OVO album. On Drizzy’s latest project More Life, there’s one sample — in particular — that really sticks out from the bunch. While artists like R. Kelly and Lionel Richie lent their past records to the release, G-Unit’s Tony Yayo also found his way onto the very first song on the album.

“Free Smoke,” which was produced by Boi-1da, contains a sample of Tony Yayo and Danny Brown’s 2010 track “Roll Up.” Before anyone outside of Detroit knew who Danny Brown was, the G-Unit rapper saw raw talent in the undiscovered star. The song was featured on their collaborative mixtape, Hawaiian Snow.

During a recent visit to VIBE with his young cohorts, Chris Miles and Young Dooey, Tony opened up about the exact moment he found out Drake wanted his song for More Life.

“I got the call from the [lawyers],” Tony says with a laugh. “Then I got the call from the big guy, Paul Rosenberg. Shout out to Shady records. Then I got the call from Fif. I was surprised, you know when one of the biggest artists in the game wants to use something from your mixtape, it’s cool. It was an honor. Drake is a monster out here right now.”
